Technical characteristics
The EPAL 1 Euro pallet is standardised under EN 13698-1 (successor to the UIC 435 leaflets of the European railways — the system dates back to 1961). Only EPAL-licensed companies may manufacture, repair and brand these pallets; DirectPAL supplies sorted, checked, EPAL-compliant pallets from that pool. Construction
11 boards (5 top deck + 3 bottom + 3 cross), 9 solid wood blocks, 78 nails stamped with a two-letter code. Board thickness: 22–24 mm. Permitted wood species: pine, fir, spruce, Douglas fir. Poplar is not permitted for stringer boards. 4 chamfered corners; bottom-board edges chamfered on both sides.
How to identify a genuine EPAL pallet
Oval “EPAL” logo hot-branded on the left and right outer blocks (1200 mm side). IPPC/ISPM 15 marking on the central block (wheat-ear logo, country code, registration number, “HT” for heat treatment). An EPAL control nail is added when the pallet has been repaired by a licensed repairer. Full detail in our guide: EPAL markings & how to spot counterfeits →
Transport
33 pallet footprints per 13.6 m semi-trailer floor, 10 per 20-ft container — loaded in stacks, a full truckload carries several hundred pallets.
When a pallet is no longer exchangeable
Missing board, split block exposing more than one nail shank, twisted blocks protruding more than 10 mm — the pallet must be repaired by a licensed repairer before re-entering the exchange pool.

Exchange pool or firm purchase?
The EPAL pallet circulates in an open exchange pool: any identical, undamaged EPAL pallet can be swapped one-for-one between supply-chain partners, without a rental operator. That is what makes it the standard of European B2B logistics — and what keeps its resale value high.
DirectPAL sells outright: no deposits, no rental contract, no pooling fees, no dispute over “exchangeable or not” at the dock. You own the pallets, you decide whether to run them in exchange, keep them in a closed loop or let them go one-way on export. For the full picture of exchange and pooling systems in Europe — and when firm purchase is the better deal — see our guide: pallet exchange & pooling →
Frequently asked questions
How much does an EPAL Euro pallet cost?
Grade 1 is priced €12.60–16.00 excl. VAT per unit and grade 2 €11.20–13.90 excl. VAT, ex-works, for full-truckload volumes. Volume and prompt payment put you at the bottom of the range.
What is the difference between grade 1 and grade 2?
Both are used EPAL pallets with identical specifications. Grade 1 is near-new — light, clean wood, no structural defects — for demanding logistics and export. Grade 2 shows visible wear but is structurally sound: the economical choice for everyday transport and storage.
Do EPAL pallets need ISPM 15 treatment for export?
EPAL pallets produced since 2010 are heat-treated and bear the IPPC/ISPM 15 marking, acceptable for most exports outside the EU and to the UK. Tell us your destination — we confirm compliance of the batch before loading. ISPM 15 guide →
Can we exchange EPAL pallets instead of buying them?
Exchange works between supply-chain partners who handle identical pallets — DirectPAL sells outright, which many buyers prefer to pooling contracts. The comparison is in our exchange & pooling guide.
What is the minimum order for delivery?
We deliver by full truckload from 300 pallets. Below that volume, your order remains available for pickup at one of our 3 depots in the Paris region: Pontault-Combault, Chilly-Mazarin and Mitry-Mory (France). Details: pickup & delivery →
